Why Do We Need Standards In Our Units?
Standards guide our units, our lessons, and our daily routine. Without standards, we could just teach only our favorite units and ignore the rest.
That does not seem fair to our students, their parents, and the larger community whom depend on us to educate children.
I admit, I love backpacking. If, however, the companies I support to support me only sold me cast iron cookware to carry, I'd be weary quickly. A heavy, waterproof, canvas tent to carry around? I might almost give up. Food that is fully hydrated may taste good, but the weight and perishability would make me quit. Let me have dehydrated food for a week! The STANDARDS in backpacking make it easier to enjoy the scenery.
The standards in education, make it easier to teach. I know what my load is and where I must go.
My compass: Common Core
My map: State Content Standards
My food: History Social Studies Framework
My sleeping bag: 3 Cs Framework for Social Studies
My tent: 21st Century Skills
My sleeping pad: TPACK
My hiking boots: Experience and pedagogy
