Math Class and 21st Century SkillsIn a math class today it is more than just being able to use different technologies. The tools that are available have moved from ruler, slide, charts to calculators and now computers.
Proficiency Scales are Based On Standards![]() Looking at the image on the right this is a 1.G.1 Standard. This is a first grade geometry section 1 standard. According to California and the Common Core State Standards it would read as follows:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.G.A.1 Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. This particular piece of writing is difficult language and in itself almost requires an already capable person in order to understand the goal. Proficiency scales as the one below can break it down into student friendly language. It also breaks it up in ways that you can see if you are in the beginning of learning it at level one or past the standard and in the above section of 4. The Proficiency Scale below is meant for a secondary site. This particular item is for tenth grade English. When you start it is easiest to start from the bottom at 2.0 and use each section as a check off list.
