Unlock the Power to Choose...

Students at continuation high schools often struggle with engagement. The goal of this study is to find which strategies are the most effective at increasing engagement and help students feel more involved in their learning and more successful in school.

Previous research has tested the effectiveness of different personal learning strategies on student engagement. These strategies were examined for their effectiveness in increasing student engagement through student choice and different learning methods. The research tested a variety of personal learning strategies such as student choice of topic. When students selected topics that aligned with their interests, their motivation and engagement increased (Luzhak, 2024). Student choice of summative assessment format was also examined and found that when students were allowed to choose their assessment format, their overall engagement increased (Spinney & Kerr, 2023). Finally, group working modalities were examined and found that collaborative learning can positively impact student engagement (Gajderowicz et al., 2023). Overall, the research has shown that personal learning strategies can have a positive effect on student engagement and learning.

What has not been examined thoroughly is how effective these strategies work at continuation high schools where students are generally less engaged. Through research of previous studies on personalized learning strategies and action research this study will show which strategies are the most effective at increasing student engagement at a continuation high school. The study will look specifically at the personalized learning strategies of student choice of topic, summative assessment choice and group or individual work choice to see which has the greatest impact.

Blog...

Along my journey of working with student engagement I kept track of the steps I took. My blog goes into detail on how I came up with the project and my thoughts about it.
