Inquiry Based Learning in Project Protect Our Ocean
Collaboration, TPACK, and Inquiry Based Learning merge into Project Protect our Ocean
Project Protect our Ocean is an Inquiry Based Project that relies on students collaborating toward a solution to an environmental problem that affects everyone : The amount of plastic garbage in the ocean. This garbage is moved by massive ocean currents that form gyres into a large garbage patch currently double the square miles of Texas. The teams had to find a solution to reduce the amount of garbage entering the ocean through the local storm drain systems. Where to implement their solution within the storm drain system was a choice.
Before embarking on Protect our Ocean, students had to learn the Engineering Design Process (EDS) and how it applies to their own life. A breakdown of the Engineering Design Unit follows below:

Introduction to the Engineering Design Process (EDS)
Solve a problem with the steps of the engineering design process
Week One
Day One: Show two videos and have students comment on the videos listed above.
Day Two: Cover the six steps of the EDS. Give students the EDS handout and they need to fill in the blanks with the correct matching bullet point.

Day Three: Short quiz on the step of the EDS
Day Four and Five: Handout for students that requires them to work in teams to solve a given problem.

Week Two:
Day One - Day Five: Allow students to explore Tinkercad by doing the ln line training and then they can be free to design and 3d print item
Create a solution to a problem in the student's life following the steps of the design process One week:
Week three:
Day One: Have students discover a problem that they can improve in their lives using the EDS.
Day Two: Hand out the EDS worksheet again and have them create and design the solution to the problem they choose. They will use graph paper to draw their designs. Must include dimensions. If they are advanced, they can design on Tinkercad.
Day Three - Day Four Students will continue to work on creating the solution to the problem they choose
Day Five: Students will give short presentation on their solution.
Final product for EDS is the design solution to their problem
