Peer Teaching: Setting the Stage for Global CitizensThrough my research, I wanted to study the outcomes of peer teaching. I was hoping not only for academic improvement but for improvement in social interactions and collaborative skills in an atmosphere in which students had had little time to develop these together. Peer teaching as a strategy can be applied to any content or subject area. The goals that need to be kept in mind are the 21st century skills of collaboration and communication.
Someone who has mastered the art of collaboration, understands that in life, we have to do things for the greater good, not always for our own personal advancement, and that by doing this, we improve the quality of life for everyone. Students come from a variety of backgrounds with strengths and weaknesses in varying areas. If children can learn how they can complement each others' areas of weakness as well as learn from others' strengths, how much more will these future adults be able to humbly problem solve together, understanding that no one person has the answers to all questions. In the spring of 2020, my students had experienced over 5 months of in person learning together but were abruptly sent home for the rest of the school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Participating in Zoom school was a big change for them and they were quite reserved when we began virtual classes. Students who once laughed and played together, were silent and shy. I didn't want to experience a year of this when I began the next school year with a new group of students in the fall of 2020. Communication is even more important in my Spanish-English dual-immersion school where students must communicate with each other in order to learn each others' language.
