Standards and Competencies

This year, through two rounds of action research, I investigated the impact giving elementary aged students opportunities to make decisions regarding their work could have on their engagement with content material. As a result of my research I have created a lesson planning template that helps teachers to incorporate student-based decision making into their lessons and can be applied to any content area.
  
  Decision Based Learning Template:
  • Students conduct research projects over several weeks.
  • Each week students have a goal - create part of an end product like a poster or a presentation.
  • Each day students have smaller goals- research information to help them complete their weekly goal.
  • Each day students are given a variety of resources to choose from. They can use all of the sources or just one to inform their research; the decision is up to them.
    
    As this strategy can be applied to any content area the standards my research addresses have more to do with teaching and instructional quality, rather than content acquisition.  These standards can be found below.
