THE CAMERA

DRAWING PAD
This is one of the most essential apps we have. The toolbox has a variety of mediums - crayon, marker, paint, pencil - in a rainbow of colors. There are stamps, stickers and papers. You can import photos or save your drawing as a photo. If you want to continue to work on a project you can save it to a journal where it can stay indefinitely. The drawings can be a standalone project, but once saved to the camera roll, the drawings can also be used in other applications and projects such as i-movie, Puppet Pals, Strip Designer, Story Buddy, Book Creator and Write to Read. This is not hard to do and gives great results. I've just started using it with Kindergartners making vocabulary movies from pictures they took. The movies can be uploaded to YouTube and put in a playlist for playback or saved to the camera roll.
The camera is already part of iPad 2 and later models. This is a powerful digital tool. Kids can take pictures for any kind of lesson and use them in other apps such as Drawing Pad (above), Strip Designer, iMovie, Story Buddy and Write to Read. We all know what a picture is worth (hint: 1000 words).
