Lesson Summary:

In this lesson students learned about their academic footprint and how greatly it can affect them as athletes in college. Students learned about how realistic these situations are and what to do differently to prevent them and the consequences that will change their lives forever. Student are often unaware of how they use social media and texting and that it can ruin their career. They need to know why and how they can make better choices for themselves and their teammates.

Teacher will need a large screen to show the video

Purpose Statement:
Students will watch a video and learn the importance of a digital footprint so that they can apply it to their lives and how they use online resources.

Objectives:
Students will become aware of the digital footprint and how it pertains to them as well as how it can hurt them and what choices they can make to protect themselves and others.

Hook
Everything you do once you walk on campus whether it's language, body language, the way you drive, the clothes you wear, can dictate whether or not you play this game or not in the future. David Ablauf, Michigan’s associate athletic director said, “we live, almost, in a transparent world today. Every person that you walk by has the potential to be a reporter...Social media habits, social media in general, really can help make or break getting you a job”. That is what he said to his team and I am saying it to you. That is how important this concept is.

Lesson Plan:

Students meet in the athletic department building room 603.
Students will hear the hook.
Students will watch the Common Sense Media video.
Students will get in groups of four and discuss stories of how someone they know has been affected or could have been affected in a negative way by the digital footprint.
After discussing in groups, students will come up with examples of how that person could have done things differently to protect themselves.
Students reconvene and talk about how to keep themselves out of harmful situations. Each group will present a scenario that could leave a negative digital footprint and how to avoid it.
After each presentation each group will have an opportunity to answer questions from the audience.
Students will be given directions for their assessment to work in groups and investigate student athletes digital footprints that have damaged their careers in some way.
Students have one week to complete the project and will present the following week.

Assessment:
Students work in teams to create their own presentation on how digital footprints effect athletes in today’s world. Each player will be given a social media outlet as their focus. Twitter, facebook, instagram, snapchat, etc.
