I studied the most effective technology, growth mindset lessons, and Common Core State Standards aligned math curriculum to gain insight into how to increase quantifiable student growth in math. The content of this website is focused on answering this question: How does implementing technology and growth mindset increase student performance in the math classroom?
I chose to focus on mathematics for may reasons. Students can tend to carry anxiety in relation to math. Additionally, students can become frustrated in this subject area which can result in them giving up and becoming uninterested. My goal before beginning this journey was to change this. My goal was to see my students become engaged and motivated in math, increase student performance, and develop innovative teaching techniques. As I began researching how to answer this question, I decided to focus on technology and a growth mindset within mathematics. These tools ended up yielding the results I was looking for. I am passionate about instilling positive growth mindset principles in my classroom. This was something I knew I wanted to implement into my research topic because I believe that teaching students to apply a growth mindset in their learning will positively affect their academic success. In order for students to have academic success in math, they needed to also have the belief that they CAN do it! Technology kept students engaged and motivated throughout this process. Technology includes the tools that allow students to represent ideas and share them with one another. With access to technology, students can experience alternate forms of learning. I began with teaching digital citizenship through Google’s Be Internet Awesome. I used an in-class flipped classroom model to better support each individual student. I created video content to put into Google Classroom for my students to use during small group rotations in class. I used technology programs for math like Prodigy, Khan Academy, and Sumdog to support student learning. I used Google Classroom to assign videos and quizzes via Google Forms in order to get immediate student feedback and provided 1:1 support. This technology provides the opportunity to redesign/readjust student learning experiences based on student feedback. Learn more about my process by looking at the links to the right.
