Overview

In order to determine whether culturally relevant pedagogy could impact student engagement and achievement, I had to  1) develop a curriculum employing culturally relevant pedagogy, 2) determine ways to measure changes in engagement and academic achievement, and 3) analyze that data .

In preparation for Step 1: Curriculum Development, I first did research on culturally relevant and culturally responsive pedagogy by analyzing the works of seminal authors Geneva Gay, Gloria Ladson-Billings, and Zaretta Hammond. Then, after attending the CABE conference (California Association of Bilingual Educators), I became aware of the books "En Comunidad" and "Textured Teaching", which focus on culturally relevant curriculum development to address and incorporate the realities of our minority students. You can find more resources in the "References" tab to the right for authors/books/websites to help further understand the philosophies surrounding culturally relevant curriculum. Next, you can view an example of a mini-unit employing this philosophy in action via the content in the "Social Commentary in Music" mini-unit in the "Lessons" tab to the right along with some student work samples.

Next, for Step 2, I prepared tally sheets to track participation, surveys for connection, and record data from the Aeries gradebook.

Lastly for Step 3, after compiling the data from Step 2, I was able to analyze and draw conclusions about whether or not this culturally relevant curriculum had a statistically significant impact on student engagement and achievement. Read more about my results in the "Assessment" tab on the right.

Tools for Content Development

One of the most valuable and helpful tools I've used in this process is a new generative AI tool called Brisk. As a language teacher, sometimes it is hard finding exact articles/content that I want to use in the target language (Spanish). With Brisk, I am able to choose any website/article and translate the content accurately into Spanish - I can also adjust the lexile level and even generate open-ended or multiple choice questions for comprehension. Please see the "How to" tab on the right for a tutorial/demonstration of Brisk.

Standards

The units incorporated Common Core ELA and History standards that focus on analyzing informational text, determining meanings, and comparing different perspectives. These also align with the World Language Culture and Connection standards. The work produced is also aligned with the World Language Communication Standards.
All of the skills and activities in the class employ the 21st Century Skills of collaboration, creativity, critical thinking and communication. Their interaction with different media sources also ties into these 21st Century Skills as well as TPACK goals. I was really impressed by the thoughtful work they produced, again examples are available in the "Lessons" tab.
