4-Day Mini Unit: Social Commentary in Music
The week-long mini-unit linked above is taken from the curriculum I developed for Unit 3 of my culturally relevant curriculum this year during my action research. This class was a Spanish III class mixed of sophomores and juniors - all native Spanish speakers. The document linked above includes the essential question, standards and lesson activities along with any videos/worksheets/documents linked that students and teacher needed access to.
*Please note that out of an abundance of caution I distributed permission slips to students to be signed by parents based on some of the language included in a few of the songs. Student Work SamplesLinked below are two examples of student slides presentations for the summative assessment at the end of this unit. Students had to choose a song (the song could be in English or Spanish) that they felt offered some sort of social commentary/critique on society. They had to include the lyrics they believed to offer the critique, and then in Spanish, they had to explain the meaning. What was the artist trying to communicate?
