21st Century Learning and Workforce Readiness
According to ACT in its 2013 Work Readiness Standards and Benchmarks: The Key to Differentiating America’s Workforce and Regaining Global Competitiveness,
"Work readiness skills include both foundational cognitive skills such as reading for information, applied mathematics, locating information, problem solving, and critical thinking and noncognitive skills, or soft skills, which are defined as personal characteristics and behavioral skills that enhance an individual’s interactions, job performance, and career prospects...Examples of soft skills include adaptability, communication skills, cooperation, discipline, and integrity." Although correlations exist between the former cognitive skills, the strongest correlation to growth mindset resides within the stated noncognitive skills. Partnership for 21st Century Learning
Although not a direct result of this endeavor, the P21 Framework for 21st Century Learning (linked image) is our school's adopted Student Learner Outcomes (SLO). Learning and innovation skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration, and life and career skills like flexibility, adaptability, initiative, and self-direction all overlap in some relatable way to the core tenets of a growth mindset. Although not an overt outcome of our SLOs, the work around growth mindset was not perceived as something foreign or diverting to either students or staff.
