CA State Standards

This endeavor is not based on specific standards and as it was applied in 9-12 maths classes. That said, it does meet in practice and principle some of the CA Anchor Standards related to Speaking and Listening. Per Carol Dweck, growth mindset can be understood to be the ability to:

1. embrace challenges,
2. persist in the face of setbacks,
3. see effort as the path to mastery,
4. learn from criticism;
5. find lessons and inspiration in the success of others.

These habits of mind lead higher achievement ultimately giving the individual a greater sense of free will. In culling the Speaking and Listening Anchor Standards under Comprehension and Collaboration, one encounters partial parity in the following areas:

• "...collaborations with diverse partners, building on others' ideas..." (4 & 5)
• "Evaluate a speaker's..." (4)

Again, they are not synonymous, but related in principle. Much has been made about the impact of effective collaboration in student learning; when students possess a growth mindset, they are naturally more receptive, giving, curious, and persistent, which is all the more critical given our shift from knowing facts to synthesizing the proverbial fire hose of facts.
