8 Standards for Mathematical Practice

​Although growing students' growth mindset does not target specific academic content standards, it does work to tackle a belief system that facilitates easier access to said content standards. From a standards perspective, I see growth mindset akin to the new standards for mathematical practice as shown and linked to the right. For example, the growth mindset traits of dedication and resilience, learning from criticism, and embracing challenges, are on some level synonymous with the concepts of perseverance (1), critique (3), and strategy (5) embedded in the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice.

The growth mindset belief system is also captured in some of the Standards for Career Ready Practice. Like the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice, the Standards for Career Ready Practice harness notions of:

"...solving problems,..." (1)

"...personal ownership..." (3)

"...ongoing education and experience" (3)

"...recognize problems..." (5)

"...contribute positively to every team." (9)

"...consider unconventional ideas and suggestions by others..." (10)

"...create solutions..." (11)

Again, these phrases are not directly correlated to growth mindset, but they are indicative of the mode of thinking deemed necessary and critical. Some trivialize growth mindset as a mere belief that intelligence can be developed through hard work, which is indeed true, but there is much more to it when considering how an individual perceives challenges and obstacles, how an individual responds to criticism, and how an individual views the success of others. There are layers and depth to growth mindset that make it all the more rich and imperative.
