About the Author
A couple of months after graduating college I decided to do something drastic and moved from my mom's modest apartment in Boston, MA and decided to serve in the CALSERVES AmeriCorps program in Napa, CA. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, I did not have a place lined up, and only had about 700 bucks in my bank account. I eventually got settled and served my AmeriCorps service at a middle school working with students as their tutor and mentor. My time serving in AmeriCorps really exposed me to a need that students lack at school. Some students need somebody to check in with during school and have a trusted adult they can rely on for academic and social emotional support. I believe that students need to be taught social emotional learning skills to excel in their academic learning.
After serving 2 years in AmeriCorps I worked at the Boys and Girls Club and somehow became the school librarian, food service manager, intervention specialist, temporary 5th grade teacher and now district secretary at the current school I work at. I have definitely worked in many different fields in education and had the pleasure working with students and supporting their learning needs. The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted many flaws in education and students were the most affected by it. Now that students have returned to in person learning I have seen students' attitudes and personalities change. The 2 years of distant learning has shown the importance and need for public schools for everybody.

Reflections on your Journey
My journey through this program has shown me how much work it takes to research and develop a research method. During this program I used many of the tools I learned to help enrich the instruction for students I worked with. Helped with my Principal with SEL strategies and help with gathering data to help support the district I work at.
Lasting Learning from the Innovative Learning program
Joining the Innovative Learning Program has sparked my interest in trying to improve and change traditional norms and understandings in education practices. I want to try to focus less on standards and instead, focus more on student centered strategies. Because in an age where information is so accessible, students need to be able to learn social and emotional skills to navigate an ever changing global economy.
