What do students need? How do we know?

​“If students monitor the physiological needs of their body, can it improve their ability to engage in school?"

We've all been through the stages of development. Being a teenager is rough. If students needs aren't met, they're likely to lash out in unpredictable ways. What happens if they don't understand how these needs affect their emotional state?

​Yes, we know about Maslow's, but are we using what we know to help students?

​As educators, we're aware of the connection between physiological needs and cognitive development: without fulfilling basic needs, students can't concentrate on school. But are we paying enough attention to what we know?

Higher and lower cognitive function are valuable for survival, but which part of the brain should be engaged at school?

"Upper" brain:
