How do we bring PE and Health into the 21st Century?Technology doesn't have to be the death of children at play, if used appropriately technology can enhance physical education. How do we utilize technology in a physical education class? A class where kids are supposed to be playing, being active, and getting their heart rates up. A place where technology has typically not been welcomed. Utilizing technology doesn’t have to be a restraint. It can be utilized to learn the rules, to perfect techniques, to practice new skills, and for peer and teacher feedback.

The Future of Physical EducationAs a physical education teacher I have always noticed that there is always a core group of students who love and excel at athletics and different physical activities. Yet, there is always that second group of students that need a little extra motivation to participate and do not share that joy for physical fitness. A lot of my students at Valley Oak High School (VOHS) fall into that second group of students. VOHS is a credit recovery high school where students come for a second chance at earning their high school diploma, which means that most were not successful in a traditional high school setting and in a traditional physical education classroom.
Since most of my students have an ill taste for physical education and health it is my job to create interest and awareness around nutrition and physical fitness. I would like to give my students something that they may have never gotten before and that is the opportunity to maintain a healthy and fit lifestyle by providing them access to information that will help them be successful in all aspects of their lives. Assess to this information can be delivered in multiple different ways, especially by utilizing technology. |

Testing Using Technology...Throughout my capstone journey I did two rounds of research were I was hoping to find a correlation between student's behaviors and their academic success with their fitness and nutrition levels.
My driving question throughout my research was "What effect does tracking nutrition digitally have on student behavior and success?" In round one of my research I had my students utilize an app on their personal device called My Fitness Pal. I did not love that app because there was little to no knowledge gained from utilizing the app, so in round two of my research I used an app called My Plate. Again this was little knowledge gained from using the app, but it was found that tracking their foods and exercises digitally made them more conscientious about what they were consuming. And by learning how to track their food digitally not only was technology implemented into a physical education class, but students learned a life long skill that will give them the opportunity to set and achieve future health and fitness goals. |
