Action Research into .....BYOD. This research was based at the school site and along with it's students. As the researcher, I wanted to make sure I truly understood the needs and benefits at Hillcrest. My driving question about how to better a system to integrate a BYOD program was the main focus on this project. I took this opportunity to the students and asked their feedback during their first year of BYOD integration. Below are two different video response from the 5th grade president speaking for all of the students during their first year of the school's BYOD program.
The research paper is called How to Start a BYOD Program: Policy-Making and Implementation and here is a taste of what the content is. "Will our students ever be using their handwriting skills again?" "How can we (as a community) better enhance the learning for all?"
Background and Need, Rationale, etc.
We started off the 2015-2016 school year, the school site launched a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program abruptly. This program gave the opportunity for students to bring their own device each day to school. This lead the action to allow teachers to start integrating technology into their lesson plans to enhance the learning of the classroom learning environment. This helped the computer ratio during testing season, since all of the district ChromeBooks would be used for testing.
In the middle of the school year, students got tired of carrying a device to and from school. Some families made the decision to keep the device at school and use another device at home to reduce the carrying back and forth. Students started to rely on the very few devices that were available at school. It was hard to get the students to remember to charge their devices. But once students started to realize that their devices were priviledge. Making sure we had a tight knit policy made students and parents more aware of how BYOD should be viewed and handled from the student on a daily basis. In the 2016-2017 school year, the school started the year with a new system. Prior to school starting we made sure there was a viable policy in place before introducing the BYOD program at Back to School night in the fall. We had some testimonies from students from the prior year along with parents' perspective on how their child succeeded in 4th and 5th grade during the first year of the program.
