Supporting newcomer ELL students using technologyNewcomer high school ELL students, who are often new immigrants, face additional academic challenges. With the advanced nature of high school-level coursework, students with limited English proficiency may find it arduous to fully comprehend and engage with academic content, as well as complete assignments in English. Unfortunately, many educators have not received sufficient training or professional development to understand the intricacies of second language learning. Some teachers prioritize academic content over language instruction, further compounding the difficulties faced by ELL students. Despite their language abilities, newcomer students are placed in general education classes to fulfill graduation requirements except with their designated English Development Class if it is offered. This research investigates the effectiveness of translation technology in aiding newcomer high school ELL students in their academic comprehension and performance.
