How Does Mindfulness Meet The Standards?
This Capstone made an attempt to demonstrate how the participation in regular routines of mindfulness practices can help children to make academic strides. The action research showed academic gains in the area of language arts but that was all the research formally assessed. That said, many studies are showing that mindfulness and meditation can help in all learning areas. Here is a look at how students may apply mindfulness to the social and cognitive work of the 4 C's of the 21st-century Common Core Standards and the SEL Competencies.
The California Education website gives detailed information about the standards and their development. There are no mindful standards, of course, but it is the purpose of my Capstone to present how mindfulness work is critical in meeting the needs of our students so that they may attempt the standards with greater success.
Here are the talking and listening standards that mindfulness addresses when discussing thoughts, feelings, and problem solving. Comprehension and Collaboration: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1.A Follow agreed-upon rules for discussions (e.g., listening to others and taking turns speaking about the topics and texts under discussion). CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.1.B Continue a conversation through multiple exchanges. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.2 Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not understood. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.3 Ask and answer questions in order to seek help, get information, or clarify something that is not understood. Presentation of Knowledge and Ideas: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.SL.K.4 Describe familiar people, places, things, and events and, with prompting and support, provide additional detail. Mindfulness and SEL Competencies
Given the social and emotional aspects that mindfulness addresses it seems important to include the standards and competencies that SEL curriculum supports. SEL implementation is on the rise and is seeing great behavioral and academic benefits, particularly in schools of at risk students. The SEL Competencies show much overlap with the 4 C's of the Common Core Standards that focus on social and meta-cognitive learning. This article asserts that, "These interpersonal and intrapersonal competencies predict grades throughout K- 12 as strongly as IQ does, and they predict performance in the workforce more strongly than IQ does. U.S. News and World Report indicates that skills such as social awareness, emotional intelligence, and self-efficacy are in particularly high demand by employers." Click here to learn more.
This link will take you directly to the Casel website that details the Social and Emotional Learning Competencies. Navigate the site to learn about their programs and the grave need for them to be taught in order to meet the learning needs of our at risk students.
