21st Century Learning and Workforce Readiness
The "Four C's" structure of 21st Century Skills is a common topic for educational discussion, planning, and goal-setting. In the model (right) created by the Partnership for 21st Century Learning (P21), the four C's are referred to as "Learning & Innovation Skills." P21 states: "Learning and innovation skills are what separate students who are prepared for increasingly complex life and work environments in today’s world and those who are not."

21st Century Skills in The Empathy Project
By its explicit goals and design, The Empathy Project is focused on building skills for success in the future workplace. Students exhibit communication skills in their interactions in various types of interactive settings: Whole group discussion, small group discussion, and partnered activities, and in sharing their personal experiences. Students are asked to engage their creativity and collaboration in building learning artifacts that reflect their similarities and differences. Both citizenship and character are put on display when putting themselves into each other's shoes to gain a better understanding of their classmates' experiences.
