Rubrics and other measures for Assessing The Empathy ProjectOne the primary questions when considering how to implement and measure the impact of my lessons was deciding just how to measure relatively abstract concepts like empathy and cultural curiosity. Through my literature review, I uncovered multiple scales designed to deliver measurable, analyzable results. Ultimately, I curated, created, and settled upon three assessment methods. These methods in conjunction would provide a range of data that would enable me to examine both the results and the internal effectiveness of my design.
1. The Empathy Questionnaire for Children and Adolescents (EmQue-CA)The EmQue-CA, developed and verified by Dr. Carolien Rieffe and her team is described as “an 18 item self-report questionnaire that examines the level of empathy as reported by the child (9-16 years) in three domains: Affective empathy, Cognitive empathy, and Prosocial Motivation” (Overgaauw et al, 2017).
2. Cultural Curiosity Rubic-Assessed Long AnswersThe Cultural Curiosity Rubric utilized in this study was develop with inspiration from various rubrics designed to measure cultural competency and augmented with an element of curiosity, or "need for cognition."
3. Observational Analysis ChecklistIn order to observe target behaviors in real-time during the partner class sessions, this observational analysis checklist was created. The checklist was information by target behaviors inferred from both the EmQue-CA and the Cultural Curiosity Rubric.
