Students with special needs and an Individual Education Program (IEP) have Post-Secondary Transition goals embedded into their IEPs when they enroll in high school. While some districts wait to draft and implement a transition plan when the student reaches the age of 16. Our district adds transition goals in the areas of Career Awareness, College Awareness, and Independent living (if applicable) at the first IEP following enrollment in the 8th grade. Students participate in a variety of career interest inventories, surveys, interviews, and questionnaires to determine their top career interest areas (i.e., Automotive, Patient Care, etc.). Additionally, they participate in various activities, presentations, etc. throughout their secondary academic years. Students work on different soft skills and learn how to complete multiple job-related documents (i.e., Resumes, applications, etc.). Lastly, students are connected with local agencies and organizations that provide support for adults with disabilities (North Bay Regional Center, Department of Rehabilitation, College Disabilities Services, etc.). Lastly, students participate in various Work-Based Learning, hands-on volunteer opportunities to gain work-related skills and experience to add to their resumes.
Students also have access to various Career Technical Education classes and career pathway courses that potential align with their top career interest areas. Our school site has various courses that align with Horticulture, Building Trades, Hospitality, Visual Performance Arts, and other career field areas. |
