Does primary language translation technology promote success among newcomer high school English learners (ELL)?Research Paper Abstract:
Newcomer English Language Learners (ELLs) face significant challenges in high school, primarily due to language barriers that hinder effective communication and participation. Translation technology can be a tool to support academic progress for newcomer, high school, English Language Learners (ELLs). Translation technology supports ELL students to overcome language barriers and participate more regularly and fully in the classroom. This study aims to examine the impact of providing translation technology on the academic success of high school, newcomer, ELLs. In a beginner ELD classroom, iPad technology will be utilized to assist these students. The study will explore how incorporating translation technology can eliminate language barriers and enhance the ability of these students to comprehend academic content and complete assignments. Data will be collected through student surveys, classroom observations, interviews with high school, newcomer, ELL students, and analysis of student assignments and assessments. Incorporating iPads with translation technology in the classroom will result in increased academic success for newcomer, high school, ELL students, as reflected in their assignment completion and comprehension.
