Learn More About the ToolboxHow can science teachers build engaging standards based units that encourage deeper learning?Science teachers across the US are just beginning to ponder how to restructure curricula to fit with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Restructuring is exactly what is needed to expose as many students as possible to the new standards.
This is an overwhelming prospect, as there are many NGSS that every student is supposed to meet. Additionally, science teachers are also responsible for Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for English Language Arts and Math as they apply in a science classroom. For teachers who are used to just teaching "their content" this can come as a bit of a shock. The Build-A-Unit Toolbox proposes restructuring as an opportunity to incorporate the 21st century skills and resources so as to introduce teachers to the standards and make science classrooms more effective at preparing students for their future. In addition, it explored the effect of collaborative learning activities on individual student achievement as measured by pretests and summative assessments.
